West hopes to be best for Equity’s ruling council

Former Sheffield Theatres artistic director Samuel West is standing for re-election to Equity’s ruling council, this time as an independent candidate.

West, a union member since 1984 and well known for his acting roles in West End theatre, on TV and in films such as Van Helsing, previously served on the council from 1996 to 2000. However, last time he stood for election it was as a part of the ruling Representative Group, then known as the RepCon faction.

West, now an independent, is regarded as a favourite for re-election, as he is one of the most high profile performers standing for council. In his election statement, West explained that he felt the union was stronger now than it had been for many years.

He added: “There are many important battles ahead - the SOLT claim, backdoor TV commissioning, promotions designed as talent contests, the need to protect our identity and the professional nature of our work.

“For 25 years I’ve worked in most areas of the business as an actor, director and artistic director. I hope I’m young enough to work tirelessly on your behalf and experienced enough to be useful.”

Polls will close on July 18 and candidates will receive results the following week before the results are announced publicly.
